Cued Speech was designed by a physicist who eventually became director of higher education at the US Department of Education. Dr. R. Orin Cornett realized the critical need to convey consonants and vowels separately, but within the same visual construct to convey spoken language visually in real time with accuracy. After taking a position as Vice President of Long Range Planning at Gallaudet College, Dr. Cornett dedicated his research time to developing what would eventually become Cued Speech. Cue Cognatio aims to carry on Dr. Cornett’s legacy of advancing literacy not only for the deaf and hard of hearing population, but for all children.
